Death Guard vs. Dark Angels (1,750 pts) – Battle Report

I’m having a real love/hate thing going on with Maelstrom of War missions and the Tactical Objective cards.  A few too many times recently I’ve seen them be randomly cruel to a player, and I’ve suffered and benefited from that.  On the other hand I also do quite enjoy the cruelty and the work that you have to do to chase the points on the cards.  But all that said I think I do prefer the Eternal War missions, I like going into a game with a grand plan and then either seeing it succeed or be stomped underfoot by a Knight.

But anyway, this would be a Maelstrom of War mission, so cards ahoy…

List Theory

IMG_5057.jpg

I enjoyed playing a Poxwalker Horde in my last game so the heart of my list remained true to that.  Two large mobs of Poxwalkers backed up by Typhus.  I also took a squad of Plague Marines with Blight Launchers, a Chaos Lord and a Noxious Blightbringer.  The idea being that this would be a footslogging horde who could advance up the table buffed by the Blightbringer (roll 2d6 when advancing and pick the highest).  The Blight Launchers are assault weapons and so can fire after advancing without penalty due the Death Guard Inexorable Advance rule.  The Chaos Lord would be there to give re-rolls, which given the low number of shots from advancing Plague Marines would make help to make them matter.

I then had a Chaos Lord supported gun line of Plasma equipped Plague Marines and a Helbrute kitted out with a missile launcher and a twin Lascannon.  With this would be two squads of Cultists to act as a screen and/or board control.  They would also serve to boost me out to two battalions so that I could get some extra CP.

For speed I took my Daemon Prince and two Bloat Drones, they would race forwards and grab objectives or kill things as appropriate.

Finally I’ve also enjoyed using my Blightlord Terminators.  Sometimes I’m inept with them, often in fact, but I enjoy them and I clearly need the practice so into the list they go.

The Game

Setup

We rolled the Tactical Cascade mission from Chapter Approved 2018.  We would be able to chose our initial two objectives and then for each objective we complete in a round we can generate two new objectives in the next (up to a maximum of six new objectives).

Deployment would be the Search and Destroy map with the two forces in opposite corners.

My Death Guard deployed first and I packed my horde ready to race forwards and take the fight to the enemy.  I dropped my gun line into cover and then my Cultists towards my rear ready to screen or grab objectives that might pop up there.  For my first two objectives I chose to secure objective markers that I already had.  That would give me an easy first two cards, which would generate four in my next turn.

The Dark Angels packed themselves into the corner opposite me and took advantage of some line of sight blocking terrain to hide away from my shooting.

Turn 1

My Daemon Prince raced forwards supported by the two Bloat Drones.  My melee horde squeeze themselves around a block building that is impassable terrain, this would prove to be a real bottle neck.  My shooting is sparse as many units have their Line of Sight blocked.  However my drones  take down a unit of scouts camped on a tall building giving me First Strike.  I spend a CP to let my Helbrute fire twice at the closest visible enemy, the scary Dreadnought, and then another CP for a re-roll.  All that gets me is two points of damage on the horrible machine, my Death Guard’s rough time with T8 units continues.

The Dark Angels race their bikes out of cover and unleash a storm of Plasma upon the leading bloat drone, the Dreadnought joins in and it erupts in a pestilent cloud of filth.  First Strike to the Marines too.  But the Drone absorbed a lot of firepower that could have gone elsewhere, so things seem to be going OK.

While we both got First Strike the Dark Angels only claimed a single Tactical Objective, so I’m a point ahead.

Death Guard:+3 (3 Total)

Dark Angels: +2 Points (2 Total)

Turn 2

I keep on pushing in with my melee horde, but the scenery is proving difficult and I can’t quite get to the enemy.  Line of Sight remains a problem, the Plasma Marines at the back manage a few shots as does the Helbrute but to no great effect.  The Daemon Prince hurls himself at an enemy speeder and rips it apart, the surviving Drone also does well in melee and destroys a few more bikes.  However the Prince, my Warlord, is looking decidedly exposed…  I also forgot to deep strike my Terminators, I’m awesome.

The Dark Angels take revenge on the Deamon Prince, he’s gunned down, that’ll be a point for killing my Warlord.  A squad of Dark Angels Cataphracti Terminators drop into my deployment zone and begin chewing their way through my Cultists.  I burn 2CP to stop a squad from breaking so that I can hold an objective, I want the VP for that.

Points wise I’m increasing my lead despite the loss of my Warlord.

Death Guard:+3 (6 Total)

Dark Angels: +2 Points (4 Total)

Turn 3

The first squad of Poxwalkers pick their way through the ruins and engage the Dark Angels.  The line of sight blocking now helps me, they manage their charges with minimal overwatch against them.  They also get that nasty Dreadnought in close combat, he won’t be shooting next turn, good.  My own squad of Terminators finally arrive on the battlefield and drop in to add pressure to the Dark Angels as they are backed into their corner.  My gun line kicks into action with overloaded Plasma taking down four of the enemy Terminators.

The Dark Angels are being surrounded, they manoeuvre slightly but are in trouble.  The Dreadnought choses to Withdraw, it’s no good in melee combat.

I continue to pick up points, the Dark Angels are unable to get any.

Death Guard:+4 (10 Total)

Dark Angels: +0 Points (4 Total)

Turn 4

In this turn the cards really turn on the Dark Angels…  I’ve got objectives that are about killing a unit, killing a unit in melee, killing a unit with a Plague Weapon, killing a character, killing a psyker and killing the enemy Warlord.  It so happens that the enemy Warlord is a psyker. Oh boy.

So in go my Terminators, and the enemy Warlord falls, along with a number of their other units.  The final Dark Angels Terminator on the loose in my Deployment Zone is blown away.  It’s really all over now.

The Dark Angels aren’t going let it go though.  They wipe out my Terminators as punishment and then the game is conceded.

Death Guard:+12 (22 Total)

Dark Angels: +2 Points (6 Total)

Post Game Thoughts

  • Did I waste my Warlord?  He is a melee unit and it’s good to kill things with him, but he’s also squishy.  He ended up being the closest unit to the enemy and he took an awful lot of firepower before falling.  This was in part because the Drone he was with made an appalling charge roll and couldn’t put himself in the way.  I made the call that the Prince was probably going to die the next round anyway and so didn’t hold him back.  The speeder was carrying some nasty relic and I wanted it gone.
  • The cards were incredibly cruel in turn 4, I had this large number of objectives that could all be scored by killing the enemy Warlord, and then I’d get an extra point on top for killing him anyway.  Brutal, unfair and brutal.
  • Typhus himself never made it into combat, he waddled along and got stuck in the traffic jam trying to clear the impassable terrain.  Having the Noxious Blightbringer with his 7″ Advance buff was great, but he meant that I had a huge number of models all trying to be in the same space at the same time.  I then manoeuvred poorly.  More work required here.
