Death Guard vs. The Imperium (1,750 pts) – Battle Report

I’ve been having real trouble taking on Knights, and in this game there would be three of the things…

List Theory

At first I became a bit pre-occupied trying to build a list that could take on the Knights.  Then, at the last minute, I though to the Plague Garden with it and built the list that I wanted to play and would have fun with.

So the heart would be a Land Raider carrying Typhus and his Deathshroud bodyguard.  I’d also take two Foetid Bloat Drones and a Daemon Prince to give me something speedy.  Blightlord Terminators are also fun and something that I feel I need to practice more with so they went into the list too.

The infantry would be two squads of Plasma equipped Plague Marines and a unit of Cultists.  A Chaos Lord also went into the mix to allow for the overcharging of the Plasma.  They’d be holding the backline.

Setup

IMG_4996.jpg

We rolled The Four Pillars mission from Chapter Approved 2018.  There would be four objectives on the battlefield.  At the end of each round you score 1VP if you hold more of them than your opponent and 3VP if you hold all of them.  There is also another 1VP per round available if you kill more units in that round than your opponent, note that this is per-round and not once at the end of the game as I thought in my previous game.  Note also that only troops can hold objectives in this mission.

The deployment would be a Spearhead Assault.  This would give both of us two of the objectives and have us pretty close to each other.

I dropped a unit of Plague Marines onto each of my objectives, one of them backed by the Chaos Lord.  The Cultists hid in the middle and would dash out to help secure either objective as required.

My Land Raider and flying units went in the middle.  They’d rush forwards and try to knock the enemy off of an objective or two.  My hope was that I’d manage that and pick up enough of a lead that I could take the game.

The enemy army consisted of three Knights and the Loyal 32, a detachment of Astra Militarum to give them some infantry (vital for this mission as it turns out) and CPs, Knights need a lot of CPs.

First turn would go the my Death Guard.

The Game

Turn 1

My Land Raider pushes out with support from my flying units, it shifts towards the enemies on my right flank.  I need the Raider dropping off its melee cargo and the Prince nearby will buff its shooting.  But shooting goes terribly for me.  My Marines are out of range and the Raider just whiffs its shots.  It kills a few of the Astra Militarum holding an objective but doesn’t do any real damage to the Knights.  And with four Lascannon shots that’s a real shame.

The Imperium strikes back, oh boy…  The Land Raider is blown away but worse still one of the squads Plague Marines is utterly wiped out.  I now hold only a single objective.

The Imperium scores well, it holds more objectives (1VP), kills a unit in the first round (1VP) and kills more units this round that I do (1VP).

Death Guard:+0 Points (0 Total)

Imperium: +3 Points (3 Total)

Turn 2

I needed this turn to go well, and it didn’t.

I threw Typhus, the Deathshrouds, the Prince and one drone against a Knight.  And the Deathshrouds and Typhus managed it alone.  This was probably overkill.  The Knight managed to smash apart all of the Deathshroud but that seems like a decent enough trade.

But this was really just a distraction, I think I should have been focussing on smashing the Imperium off of an objective.  One drone and my deep striking Terminators nearly managed it.  Another drone would have got the job done.

The Imperium fires back and then charges into a unit of Cultists killing most and leaving the survivor to run away as his morale fails.  I still hold one objective but the loss of the Cultists means that it’s impossible for me to hold two of them.

The Imperium once again kill more units than I do and also hold more objectives than me, another 2VP for them.

Death Guard:+0 Points (0 Total)

Imperium: +2 Points (5 Total)

Turn 3

I manage to finally clear the Imperium off of one objective, a turn or two too late, but fail by a pretty close margin to clear them off of the second.

The surviving Death Guard units prove to be pretty hardy but my Daemon Prince Warlord does fall.

I finally kill more units this turn than the Imperium do so I pick up a point, the Imperium pick up a single point for killing my Warlord.

Death Guard:+1 Points (1 Total)

Imperium: +1 Points (6 Total)

Turn 4

The game is really over as time is against us, the Imperium pick up a single point for something, I think it was because they finally wiped out my remaining squad of Plague Marines and yet had a trooper or two still holding an objective on their side.

Death Guard:+0 Points (1 Total)

Imperium: +1 Points (7 Total)

It’s 7 points to 1 and I can no longer hold objectives and we need to pack up.  If there were a turn 5 I might have been able to wipe out the remaining Astra Militarum infantry but I wouldn’t close that lead.  Victory to the Imperium.

Post Game Thoughts

  • Turn one was terrible for me.  I only had the Land Raider that could shoot at the enemy and it messed up its shots.  Meanwhile he had three Knights that could shoot at practically anything on the table.  More LOS blocking terrain might help?
  • Turn two yet again demonstrates that I need to focus on the mission.  Killing a Knight felt satisfying but if I’d have sent the drone off to help the other one kill the troops on an objective then I could have stopped the Imperium claiming another point.  Typhus and his Deathshroud have a lot of killing power between them.
  • Turn three really makes it clear that my only goal should have been to clear the enemy off of their objectives.  They only had three squads of Guardsmen, had I done that I would have been killing more units which might have earned me VP and denied them the VP they were earning for holding onto them.
  • What to do about Knights?  The obvious answer is to get a Knight of my own.  But right now there are other more “fun” things I wish to do, such as getting my Nurgle Daemon battalion onto the table.  Insisting on more LOS blocking terrain might help, that the Knights can just lurk at the back and blow away pretty much anything anywhere on the table isn’t helping.  But, and I say this again, I must also really focus on the mission.  I can’t really hurt the Knights, but I could have wiped out the Astra Militarum instead, and that would have taken away a large chunk of their ability to score points.  Focus!
