Death Guard vs Imperium (3000 pts)

IMG_3868.jpgAnother big game, my biggest so far.  This time I was taking on the Astra Militarum and the Adeptus Custodes.  What worried me though was the Baneblade, the last time I met this things did not go well…

List Theory

3000 points is a lot to play with, so I started off by putting in the things that I hoped would do well.

That meant that I took a Land Raider carrying Typhus and his Deathshroud body guards.  Both of my Plagueburst Crawlers made the table as did my Daemon Prince and drones for some flying speed and mobility.  Then I took lots of infantry as I felt the need to work on that part of my Death Guard.  So four squads of Plague Marines, one melee and three Plasma, and two squads of Poxwalkers for objective holding and tarpitting.

The idea was that I had a mix of stuff.  Taking two Rhinos meant I could send my melee Plague Marines and a Plasma squad off somewhere quickly.  I would then have two other squads and some Poxwalkers to hold things in my deployment zone.  The Prince and Drones could either go forward to grab things or hang back to deal with deep strikers.  The Crawlers and the Land Raider would hurl themselves forwards and hopefully get into melee.

Set Up

IMG_3869.jpg

We rolled the Supplies from Above mission from Chapter Approved 2018 with deployment at opposite ends along the length of the table.  There would be four objectives on the table that would drift around.  Flyers would get priority on controlling them, then other units as per the usual rules.

The Imperium had to set up first and they set up along the wall on their side of the table. I set my units up as far forward as I could ready to charge forwards.

The Game

Turn 1

IMG_3870.jpg
The Imperium charge through and around the walls of the fortress.

The Imperium surged forwards, neither of us seemed to want to sit there.  The Baneblade combined with the Vengeance for Cadia stratagem was an engine of destruction.  For 1 CP against chaos you can re-roll all failed hits and all failed wounds.  It was pretty much point at a unit and remove it.  The hail of fire took down at least one unit, one of the Poxwalker units, and the Imperium got a point for first strike.  My Landraider was taken straight down to four wounds though, not good.  I had spent the two CPs to have every unit in cover on the first turn but forgot it for the first few rounds of fire.

This is what happens when you forget you are in cover…

My turn had some moments that went really well.  The two squads of Plasma Plague Marines backed by a Chaos Lord for re-rolls did a fair chunk of damage to the Imperial Venerable Land Raider.  But most other stuff didn’t work well.  I did get first strike and took out about three units of the Guard, but they’re cheap and pretty disposable.  My Land Raider having been hammered down to four wounds was terribly ineffective.

The end of Turn 1

The scoring at the end of turn 1 was 1 points each due to both succeeding at First Strike.

Imperium:+1 Point (1 Total)

Death Guard: +1 Point (1 Total)

Turn 2

At the start of the turn both sides controlled two objectives, two points earned each.

The Imperials kept on pushing forwards and their deep striking units entered the table.  A unit of Tempestus Scions appears to protect a gap in the fortress wall and the objective that was behind it.  Adeptus Custodes leaped out of their Land Raider and using a Teleport Homer and the Vexilla Teleport Homer stratagem brought in even more Custodes right in front of my Plague Marines.  A Dreadnought also appeared near the other objective in my deployment zone.

The Custodes really cut a path through my forces, they were able to re-roll failed hits and misses due to being with 6″ of Captain-General Trajann Valoris, and that really hurt.  I managed to fight back using the Counter Offensive stratagem and the ability of my Foul Blightspawn to force charging units to fight last in the fight phase with other units who hadn’t charged but I wasn’t do enough damage quickly enough.

I kept on pushing my own units forwards and deep struck my own Terminators in my opponents deployment zone.  They used their bolters and a successful charge to take out an officer holding an objective and would be ready to hold it themselves when we scored at the start of the next turn.

But I did loose Typhus, he charged the Dreadnought, I figured that I had to try and take it out.  He did some damage, but then died in it’s counter attack.

Imperium:+2 Points (3 Total)

Death Guard: +2 Points (3 Total)

Turn 3

At the start of the turn my Death Guard held 3 objectives while the Imperium only held 1.

The Custodes kept chewing through the units that were in the Rhinos.  This included my warlord who died at the end of a Custodes blade.  My units were being rapidly depleted, the Baneblade contributed to this with that damn stratagem again.

On my turn I finally got my unit of Chaos Spawn into a melee, but they did very little damage and died as the Custodes fought back.  Passing up on some easy kills my Daemon Price leaped over a wall to capture an objective ready for the start of the next turn.

While we held two objectives each at the start of the turn the Imperium picked up an extra point for killing my warlord.

Imperium:+2 Points (5 Total)

Death Guard: +3 Points (6 Total)

Turn 4

The Death Guard still hold 3 objectives at the start of the turn compared to the Imperium’s 1.  I’m ahead, but the game isn’t going well, will it be enough of a lead?

The Imperium push on and start to advance onto the building on my right flank the holds one of the objectives.  They wipe out the troops that are there and take it.  On my left my Poxwalkers are wiped out and the Dreadnought takes that objective too.

On my turn all I have left is one Deathshroud who hurls himself at a Leman Russ and achieves very little.

Imperium:+1 Points (6 Total)

Death Guard: +3 Points (9 Total)

Turn 5

It’s all over really, at the start of the turn the Imperium controls 3 out of the four objectives.  If the game had have ended now I would only be a point behind, but it doesn’t, we roll for a turn 6.

Imperium:+3 Points (9 Total)

Death Guard: +0 Points (9 Total)

Turn 6

There’s nothing that I can do, my Deathshroud will either die or maybe kill something, but it won’t affect the game.

The Imperium now claim all four objectives at the end of the turn.

Imperium: +4 Points (13 Total)

Death Guard: +0 Points (9 Total)

The Result

At the end of the game the Imperium pick up another point for Line Breaker as they have units in my deployment zone, and we’re all done.

Imperium: +1 Points (14 Total)

Death Guard: +0 Points (9 Total)

Post Game Thoughts

  • Baneblades + the Venence for Cadia stratagem is an awesome combination.  The Baneblade can put out an awful lot of firepower.  I think it’s 4 sponson mounted Lascannons, 2 sponson mounted Twin Heavy Bolters (12 shots), 1 hull mounted Twin Heavy Bolter (6 shots) Autocannon (2 shots), Baneblade Battle Cannon (3d6 shots) and a Demolisher Cannon (d3 shots) all hitting on a 4+.  That’s a lot of firepower to be buffed by one stratagem making it the perfect choice for it.
  • I just ignored the Baneblade.  My thoughts were that yes it was going to be deleting units off of the table but it wasn’t going to be winning the game.  Was that the right decision?  I’m really not sure.
  • I tried to stop the Landraider carrying the Custodes but failed, badly.  If I could have popped it then the occupants would have been exposed to fire and I could have engaged them how I wanted rather than having to react.
  • Death Guard are, I believe, an army who like to be up close to their enemy.  They seem to have a lack of long range anti-armour weapons.  This does seem to mean that in the first turn they can have a problem when they’re not close enough to the enemy to hurt them.  As a partial means to address this I’m going be adding some Armigers to my army.  I also need to bring out my Helbrute more often.
  • Did I scatter my army too much.  I had one Plagueburst Crawler going up one flank, two Rhinos on the other and the Land Raider and my second Crawler in the centre.  Should I have held them together and really hammered the Land Raider and the Custodes?
  • The Custodes were really good, I only took down one of the three bikes and it took a lot of effort to deal with the ground pounders.  They got to my valuable, and vulnerable, characters far too easily.  I must do a better job of looking after them.
