Death Guard vs Dark Angels (1750 points)

I’ve played this player and his Dark Angels before (Death Guard vs Dark Angels (1500 points)), it was time for a rematch…

List Theory

The list was built to let me try out my fast moving flying units.  So I took three Bloat Drones and my Daemon Prince.  I had something fast, so now I wanted something slow, Pox Walkers, lots of them.  I took two full units of 20 and if you taking Pox Walkers you’ll also want Tyhpus to back them up.  I wanted some anti-armour so took two Foul Blightspawns, they’re nice in twos as it helps flatten out the randomness of their weaponry.  I took a single squad of Blightlords that I would use to drop behind enemy lines to take or deny objectives as appropriate.  The list was finished with two Plagueburst Crawlers to soak up fire and a squad of Cultists.

I don’t have many command points from this as after spending so much on the flyers I couldn’t seem to fit in any more HQs.  I had three Fast Attack and three Elite units so I could have picked up an extra two command points if I’d worked on things a bit more.

The intent was that the fast moving flying units would be ready to zip around the board grabbing objectives as required.  Ideally they would stay together to shelter the Prince and to benefit from his Arch-Contaminator Warlord Trait.

The Zombies would shuffle across the board as fast as they could backed up by Typhus.  The Crawlers would go ahead of them to act as distractions and to possibly take out any screening units so as to let the Pox Walkers get at what was behind them.

Set Up

We rolled the Kill Confirmed Maelstrom of War mission from Chapter Approved.  A pretty vanilla mission with a quirk that objectives for killing a particular thing could not be discarded unless they were impossible to achieve.

My Cultists went on one extreme flank, my fast attack flyers in the middle and everything else on the other flank.

The Dark Angels put some scouts on objectives in ruins at the front of their deployment zone.  A clutch of units then went opposite my Pox Walkers and the flyer was stuffed to the brim with Terminators, a Dreadnought and some characters.

The Game

In short it was a victory for the Death Guard with the Dark Angels conceding after being taken down to a single Dreadnought.  I lost a lot of Pox Walkers, three out of five Terminators and my Blightspawns.

In a little bit more detail…

I lost the roll for the first turn but managed to seize it.  In that turn the Marine Scouts were all wiped out.  My flyers took out one squad while my Pox Walkers backed up by the Crawlers took out another.  The flyers also grabbed an objective while my Cultists grabbed another.  Three points in that first turn in total.

The Marine player once again suffered from terrible rolling, his units advanced into my Pox Walkers including his impressive looking huge Dreadnought but achieved very little.  More worryingly I made a major error in positioning and had left a huge flyer shaper hole in my back field which the flyer pounced in to.

In the second turn I was desperate to try and kill the flyer quickly so that the Marines inside would tumble out and then be open to my shooting and close assaults.  I got it down to a point or two away but didn’t kill it.  My flyers swung over towards the flank where all the action was and then I made another terrible error.  Flyers now cannot ignore scenery and other units when charging, so I’d left them unable to join the combat.  I dropped my Terminators in where they could claim two mission cards, an objective and killing a psyker.  They achieved neither this turn but were getting there.

The Marines were unlucky again on there turn and didn’t do a lot of damage, a Crawler was taken down to a single wound but didn’t die.

The third turn was, I think, the end of it all.  My flyers got into the action in the centre, Typhus was swinging his scythe around, the Dark Angels’ Warlord fell to my Daemon Prince and my Terminators finally nailed the psyker and gained an objective.

The Dark Angels did get my Warlord down to a single wound but he didn’t fall.  And then it was just the Dreadnought left so we called the game.

Post Game Thoughts

  • I knew the flyer was coming in and I knew it had units in that were good at close combat.  So why on earth did I leave a nice space for it at my rear and why did I not screen my units better.  My opponent spotted my error and exploited it wonderfully.
  • I think I used my flyers pretty well other than the incredibly stupid move where I forgot that they can’t ignored scenery on a charge.  I have no idea what I was thinking of.  It delayed their arrival in combat by a round.
  • Given those two errors I think I played reasonably well, it was nice to have a Death Guard army that had some nice speedy elements to it.
