Death Guard vs Dark Angels (1500 points)

Deployment

IMG_2911.jpgI’m all lined up to take on the Dark Angels.  I’m expecting them to be aggressive and come right for me.  I’ve wrapped my Plague Marines in Cultists to try and buy them some time.  I should have deployed them further back, units attacking the Cultists can easily consolidate into the Marines after a combat.

Turn 1

I don’t get the first turn and, as expected, some of the Dark Angels hurl themselves at me.  However not all of them, which was curious.  However things did not go well for the Imperials.  The Scouts only kill a few Cultists while the jet does blow away a couple of of Plague Marines but failed all it’s shooting attacks.

And then it’s my turn…

Neither of those aggressive units survive.  My Foul Blightspawn hoses down the flyer with filth and then the Daemon Prince rips it apart.  The Plague Marines and the Psyker make short work of the Scout Marines.  The rest of the Death Guard grinds slowly forwards.

Turn 2 Onwards

The Dark Angels deep strike in some Death Wing Terminators, but they blow their charge rolls and are equipped with only melee weapons so achieve nothing else.

On my turn the remaining Dark Angels are surrounded as my Terminators deep strike behind them and my Daemon Prince swoops in.  Then it’s just a case of grinding them down, and ground down they were.

Thoughts

  • I had a huge amount of luck in this game while my opponent had very little.  However this made me think about the next point…
  • Deep striking melee only units, too risky?  If you deep strike a unit equipped with only melee weapons it’s going to have to make a 9″ charge, which is less than 30% without any re-rolls.  A CP fuelled re-roll of a single die takes this up to just over 50%, but even that’s not so high.  And if your unit messes up that roll then it’s doing nothing for a turn.  I think my Terminators blew their charge, but four of them still had combi-bolters for 16 dice of rapid fire attacks.
  • I did deep strike my Terminators much better in this game than I sometimes do.  Even with a blown charge they still plodded into battle and were useful.  You really have to think about where they’re going to end up and no just go chasing a single thing in a far corner of the table.
